Herzog Foundation Publication Celebrates 11 Wins at EPA Awards
The Lion, the online news publication of the Herzog Foundation, earned 11 awards at the Evangelical Press Association’s annual convention last week, including an overall “Award of Merit” in the online news category. This marks a milestone achievement for The Lion, bringing its total number of national awards to over 20 in less than three years.
The Evangelical Press Association (EPA) hosts one of the most competitive contests in Christian journalism, drawing hundreds of submissions from leading faith-based publications across the country. The Lion earned top-five placements in a wide range of categories, including interview article, podcast, e-newsletter, article series, and multimedia production.
“The Lion offers a steady and conservative viewpoint to its readership,” wrote one EPA judge, who awarded the publication an overall “Award of Merit” for excellence in online news.
Managing Editor Josh Mann received a first-place honor in the “interview article” category for his profile of a Herzog Foundation Teacher of the Year. Reporter Adam Wittenberg took third in “personality article” for a similar feature.
The publication’s weekly news show, The Lion Week in Review, earned third place and fourth place in audio and video podcast, respectively. One judge praised the video podcast as “really close to being a breakout initiative,” noting its “top notch” production quality.
The Lion’s Weekly Digest newsletter also received recognition, earning third place for its clean, effective design and strong content organization. “The organization is solid, and works well visually,” wrote one judge.
Executive Editor Michael Ryan’s 10-part article series based on his book YouRule! earned fifth place in the “article series” category.
Additional honors included:
- Third place in “website design”
- Fourth place in “critical review”
- Fifth place in “long-form video”
- Fifth place in “short-form video”
“These awards are a testament to the great team of editors, writers, and media creators at The Lion, as well as the support and vision of the Herzog Foundation,” said Mann. “Less than four years after launching The Lion—and more than 9,000 articles later—we continue to grow and aim high. We’re just getting started.”
