Medal of Honor Recipient Earl Plumlee Shares Story of Faith and Courage at Herzog Foundation Event
Master Sergeant (Ret.) Earl Plumlee, a Medal of Honor recipient, captivated a Herzog Foundation audience Thursday night with a firsthand account of his heroic actions during the Afghan War. Plumlee spoke as part of the Foundation’s American Dream Speaker Series, which invites distinguished individuals who embody the American Dream to share their stories with the community at its Kansas City-area campus.
Plumlee, a Green Beret and Special Forces sniper, recounted the August 28, 2013, Taliban assault on a U.S.-Polish camp in Afghanistan, where he faced a coordinated attack involving a cement truck packed with explosives, dozens of insurgents in suicide vests, and intense gunfire. Amid the chaos, Plumlee demonstrated extraordinary courage and ingenuity, repeatedly neutralizing threats, rescuing wounded comrades, and ultimately halting the enemy’s advance.
“I thought maybe a tank had come out and hit him with the main gun, because I’d never seen anybody just disappear before,” Plumlee said, describing the moment he eliminated a suicide bomber with a single sniper shot. His decisive actions earned him the nation’s highest military honor, presented by President Joe Biden.
Plumlee credited his survival to both divine protection and his mother’s prayer circle, emphasizing the miraculous nature of escaping hundreds of bullets and dozens of suicide bombers. He also shared how the battle’s outcome shifted Taliban tactics and underscored the impact that one determined individual can have in critical moments.
Beyond his personal story, Plumlee offered insights on U.S. military strategy and international conflicts. He reflected on the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, shared lessons from his briefings with President Donald Trump, and discussed potential implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the future of U.S.-China relations.
Despite addressing challenges carried over from previous administrations, Plumlee expressed optimism about the readiness and resilience of the American military, noting recent improvements in morale and recruitment.
The American Dream speaker series, organized by the Herzog Foundation, provides a platform for leaders, veterans, and innovators to inspire the public through stories of courage, service, and perseverance.
