The Lion
Job Summary:
This is a remote, contract role with per-story compensation. The ideal candidate has a background in journalism and excels at crafting engaging, 2–4-minute pre-packaged news stories. Responsibilities include researching, writing, and editing stories that align with the mission of The Lion. Some stories will be assigned, but most can be pitched independently. Candidates may also assist with social media content and use multimedia tools to enhance storytelling and grow audience reach.
Responsibilities:
- Research and investigate news stories, trends, and topics to develop engaging content—particularly in the areas of school choice, cultural issues, family, parenting, and faith.
- Create stand-alone video stories (2–4 minutes), typically including a set-up, edited package, and wrap.
- Conduct interviews with sources to gather information and insight.
- Pitch original story ideas and contribute to editorial planning.
- Collaborate with producers, editors, and fellow journalists to ensure high-quality news coverage.
- Utilize video production, photography, and basic editing skills to develop multimedia content.
- Contribute live to The Lion Week in Review via video feed on production day (once a week), as needed.
- Ensure all work meets The Lion’s journalistic standards, including accuracy, clarity, and adherence to style guidelines.
- Candidates with strong writing and editing abilities may be considered for an expanded role contributing to The Lion’s online platform.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field preferred but not required.
- Proven experience in journalism or a similar role with a strong portfolio of published work online or video.
- Proficiency and comfort in shooting and editing video and audio and appearing on camera.
- Familiarity with social media management and strategies a plus but not required.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards.
- A commitment to ethical journalism practices and continuous learning in the field.
