Journalism Internship

Overview: 

The Lion is offering two journalism internships for the summer of 2026, based in Smithville, MO – just north of Kansas City and 15 miles from the airport. This will be an eight-week program (June and July 2026) with housing provided and a stipend. The internship includes mentorship from long-time reporters and editors, access to a state-of-the-art studio and a week trip to Washington, D.C., for America’s 250th birthday celebration. Applicants should align with the mission of the Herzog Foundation and support the work of The Lion – an online publication that covers various issues facing American families, culture, and education.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Pitch and write news stories in a timely manner 
• Develop a process for finding and reporting relevant news stories 
• Work with the editorial calendar 
• Accept editing feedback 
• Fulfill other writing duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• College upperclassmen entering their junior or senior year 
• Evident writing skills 
• Curious reporter-mindset  
• Ability to meet deadlines 
• Work well in a team environment 
• Willingness to learn and grow 
• Familiar with Microsoft Word, Google docs and sheets 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Deadline-driven journalism experience 
• Understanding of the Christian and education content and marketing spaces 
• Experience with WordPress 
• An understanding of best practices in SEO and social media marketing
